The shards of wind assaulted skin,
The earth dawned frost’s attire.
The sun, its rays assuring warmth,
Had proved to be a liar.
A brittle lattice barred the sky
By limbs sprawled stiff in death,
While the sentry fog was tracking
Every breath by icy breath.
All men, breeze-battered in the dusk,
Found solace by their hearths,
Flame had quelled the war for earth.
And so the winter’s captive guests
Were willfully deceived,
For beyond their frail blockade
An arctic raw hedged their reprieve.
